Introduction

HLSIntel is committed to protecting your privacy. HLSIntel is not a business; it is a non-profit resource for our student community. As such, we only gather data that helps us run the site in a way that is user-friendly and have reduced the amount of data gathered where possible.

This policy describes the types of information we may collect from you or that you may provide when you visit HLSIntel.com (our Website) and our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information.

This policy applies to information we collect:

  • On our Website; or
  • In email, text, and other electronic messages between you and our Website.

It does not apply to information collected by:

  • Student Government (“SG”) offline or through any other means, including on any other website operated by SG; or
  • Journal of Law and Technology (“JOLT”) offline or through any other means, including on any other website operated by JOLT and any information collected as a part of JOLT’s print journal or online companion journal, JOLT Digest.

Please read this policy carefully to understand our policies and practices regarding your information and how we will treat it. By accessing or using our Website, you agree to this privacy policy. This policy may change from time to time (see Changes to Our Privacy Policy). Your continued use after we make changes is deemed to be acceptance of those changes, so please check the policy periodically for updates. Where the policy refers to “we,” “us,” or “our,” it refers to the development and maintenance teams for HLSIntel.

"Personally Identifiable Information" is information that tells us specifically who you are, like your name, street address, email address, billing address, credit card number, and expiration date. "User Information" means all Personally Identifiable Information and any other forms of information discussed in this Privacy Policy, including the Internet Protocol (“IP”) address of a user's computer. We use the term "aggregate" when we combine information from various persons or users. Information is said to be "anonymized" if it does not identify individual persons or entities or associate a particular person or entity with such information.

SG and JOLT

JOLT may access our Website data to perform analyses that will either allow us to maintain the website or will help us develop more services as we learn about how the site is being used.

Neither group will use data for any other purpose than those listed below. Any information, including email addresses, provided by incoming 1L students will not be used for recruiting, sign-up, or event purposes by either the SG or JOLT. No information (anonymous or otherwise) will be shared with SG or JOLT for use in their operations not related to our Website.

What Information is Anonymized or Confidential

Certain information that you provide to our Website is intended to be tied to your account and therefore to your email address. For example, we do tie your textbook listings to your account so that you can more easily manage these listings.

Other types of information are not directly tied to your email address. When you upload an outline or an exam answer, we do not directly associate your email address with that upload or with the grade you listed. We also remove all metadata from any files that you upload.

However, in order to ensure that our Website complies with DMCA § 512 (requiring that we terminate repeat infringers who upload copyrighted material), we maintain an anonymized link between your uploads and your email address. We cannot automatically determine which users have uploaded documents. It is our policy that no member of the HLSIntel.com team, SG, or JOLT will break that anonymized link to identify you except in two instances:

  • To identify and terminate the accounts of repeat infringers under DMCA § 512 or those who violate our Terms and Conditions.
  • To comply with any lawful court order, law, or legal process, including to respond to any government or regulatory request.

We will not, under any other circumstances, attempt to discover the individual identity of the user who uploaded a document.

Further, we do not check the content of data that you upload to ensure that you have remove all substantive data from the file that could be used to identify you. Please check all documents for any identifying information before you upload them, and email our Website team at itshlsintel@gmail.com if you have accidentally uploaded a document that contains identifying information.

Information We Collect About You and How We Collect It

HLSIntel uses Google Analytics. This means that as you use the site, cookies will collect aggregate information to provide us with statistics about the site. This section describes the type of data that we collect.

We collect several types of information from and about users of our Website, including information:

  • by which you may be personally identified, such as your e-mail address (“personal information”);
  • that is about you but individually does not identify you, such as grades associated with an uploaded outline or exam;
  • that is not about you and from which you cannot be identified, such as attack outlines or anonymized exam answers; and
  • about your internet connection, the equipment you use to access our Website and usage details. We collect this information:
  • Directly from you when you provide it to us.
  • Automatically as you navigate through the site. Information collected automatically may include usage details and IP addresses.

Information You Provide to Us. The information we collect on or through our Website may include:

  • Information that you provide by filling in forms on our Website. This includes information provided at the time of registering to use our Website and login information.
  • Information that you provide by uploading documents, including outlines and exam answers.
  • Records and copies of your correspondence (including email addresses), if you contact us to report a problem or request a change to your information.
  • Details of textbook transactions you carry out through our Website.

You also may provide information to be published or displayed (hereinafter, "posted") on public areas of the Website, or transmitted to other users of the Website or third parties (collectively, "User Contributions"). This may include faculty reviews or textbook listings. Your User Contributions are posted on and transmitted to others at your own risk. Although we limit access to those with “law.harvard.edu” email addresses, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable.

Information We Collect Through Automatic Data Collection Technologies. As you navigate through and interact with our Website, we may use automatic data collection technologies to collect certain information about your equipment, browsing actions, and patterns, including:

  • Details of your visits to our Website, including traffic data, logs, and other communication data and the resources that you access and use on the Website.
  • Information about your computer and internet connection, including your IP address, operating system, and browser type.

The information we collect through Google Analytics automatically is aggregate statistical data and does not include personal information. It helps us to improve our Website and to deliver a better and more personalized service, including by enabling us to:

  • Estimate our audience size and usage patterns.
  • Recognize you when you return to our Website.

We disclose as little information as possible. We will only do so in the following circumstances:

  • To fulfill the purpose for which you provide it. For example, if you post contact information in a textbook posting, we will automatically display that information to assist with the transaction. If you upload a professor review, we will post it for other students to read.

  • To comply with any lawful court order, law, or legal process, including to respond to any government or regulatory request.
  • To enforce or apply our terms of use.

Accessing and Correcting Your Information

We do not create profiles at Our Website. However, some information, such as your textbook listings, are connected to your student email address so that you can manage your listings. You can review and change your listing information by logging into Our Website and visiting your textbook listings page.

You may also send us an email at itshlsintel@gmail.com to request access to, correct or delete any personal information that you have provided to us. We may not accommodate a request to change information if we believe the change would violate any law or legal requirement or cause the information to be incorrect.

Proper access and use of information provided on the Website, including User Contributions, is governed by our terms of use.

Children Under the Age of 13

Our Website is not intended for children under 13 years of age. No one under age 13 may provide any information to our Website. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are under 13, do not use or provide any information on this Website or on or through any of its features/register on the Website, use any of the interactive or public comment features of this Website or provide any information about yourself to us, including your name, address, telephone number, email address, or any screen name or user name you may use. If we learn we have collected or received personal information from a child under 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information. Your California Privacy Rights

California Civil Code Section § 1798.83 permits users of our Website that are California residents to request certain information regarding our disclosure of personal information to third parties for their direct marketing purposes.

Data Security

The safety and security of your information also depends on you. We use Google OAuth to authenticate your login.

Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the internet is not completely secure. Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our Website. Any transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Website.

It is our policy to post any changes we make to our privacy policy on this page with a notice that the privacy policy has been updated on the Our Website homepage.
